How an India-based biotechnology company is building the country’s deepest expertise in Bacillus spore science — and why the world’s formulators are paying attention

MUMBAI, INDIA — 05 September 2026 — There is a quiet problem at the heart of the global probiotics industry, and most consumers have never heard of it. A probiotic capsule may leave the factory with billions of live organisms inside it. By the time it reaches a pharmacy shelf in a humid coastal city, sits through a summer, and then travels through the acid of the human stomach, a large share of those organisms may no longer be alive to do anything at all.

The science: why a spore behaves differently

Most probiotic organisms in commercial use are vegetative bacteria — living, metabolically active cells that must be kept alive from fermenter to gut. They are sensitive to heat, moisture, oxygen and gastric acid. They often require cold-chain storage, protective encapsulation, and generous overages to compensate for what is lost along the way.

Spore-forming Bacillus species work on an entirely different principle.

Under defined conditions, these organisms form an endospore — a dormant, metabolically inert structure protected by a multi-layered proteinaceous coat and a dehydrated core stabilised by dipicolinic acid and calcium. In this state, the organism is not merely robust; it is functionally suspended. It withstands elevated temperatures, desiccation, mechanical stress, prolonged ambient storage and passage through gastric pH without meaningful loss of viability.

The spore then germinates in the more hospitable environment of the small intestine, returning to its vegetative state to perform its biological function — competitive exclusion of undesirable organisms, production of antimicrobial peptides and enzymes, and support of the resident microbial community — before transiting out of the body.

Bacillus clausii — and the depth behind a single strain

Bacillus clausii occupies a particular position in probiotic science. It is a Gram-positive, alkaliphilic, spore-forming organism with a well-characterised tolerance profile, and it has a long clinical history in gastrointestinal formulations across Europe and Asia — most notably in oral suspension formats used in paediatric and adult gut-flora support.

What makes it commercially demanding is that it is unforgiving to manufacture. Sporulation efficiency, spore purity, heat-resistance characteristics and CFU stability are all sensitive to fermentation media design, aeration profile, harvest timing and downstream processing. Small deviations show up months later as failed stability studies.

“Anyone can buy a strain,” Mr. Sarath notes. “Very few organisations in this country can take a Bacillus strain from culture bank to a validated, reproducible, export-grade spore product with the documentation that a regulated market demands. That gap is where Anneo lives.”

Built for the customer, not the commodity market

Anneo Biotech has been deliberate about refusing the low-cost supplier position that Indian ingredient manufacturers are so often pushed into.

The company’s facility operates under ISO 9001:2015, FSSC 22000 v6.0, HACCP, Halal and Kosher certifications, and is progressing on a WHO-GMP approval pathway. Fermentation capacity currently stands at 2 KLPD, with an additional unit planned and further capacity being scaled at a second Indian site. “Our customer is usually a formulator with a deadline and a specification they cannot compromise,” says Mr. Sarath. “They do not want marketing. They want a certificate of analysis that matches reality, a strain that behaves the same in batch 40 as it did in batch one, and a technical person who picks up the phone. We have built the company around those three things.”

The road ahead: from spore science to whole-body wellness

The company’s research and development agenda extends well past its current catalogue. Active workstreams include postbiotics — non-viable microbial fractions and metabolites that offer stability and safety advantages in sensitive populations — as well as selenium and organic trace-mineral yeasts, aquaculture-specific probiotic strains, and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), an area in which Indian manufacturing capability remains almost entirely absent.
