What happens when the only survivor of a family massacre discovers that the legacy she is expected to inherit may be part of the very system that destroyed her family?

That question drives Inheritance of Fire: Blood Remembers What History Buries, a dark fantasy novel by S. P. Dayne, published by Nu Voice Press. Blending political intrigue, magical investigations and a mystery that stretches across generations, the novel follows a young woman determined to uncover the truth behind her family’s murder, even as each discovery makes the world around her more dangerous. The story begins with the destruction of House Beowulf, a powerful family whose members have served the Crown as the feared “Royal Dogs”. Ariel Beowulf, just 18, is left as the family’s sole known survivor. Along with her title, she inherits a duty bound by a royal contract that has kept her family in the Crown’s service for generations. But Ariel has questions that cannot be answered by simply accepting her place in the established order. Why were her parents murdered? Why did their bodies disappear before reaching the morgue? And could someone have survived the fire?

Determined to find answers, Ariel joins forces with Heritage scholar Xavier Ainsworth, her fiancé Lionel Kingston and a growing group of unlikely allies. Their investigation leads them through a web of assassins, missing children, illegal experiments and stolen magical abilities. What first appears to be a family tragedy gradually opens into something much larger: a conspiracy connected to political corruption, secret research and the unexplained deaths of monarchs over several centuries. One of the novel’s defining features is its approach to fantasy. Rather than centring solely on battles or a conventional quest, Inheritance of Fire builds its world through investigation, hidden records and the uneasy relationship between power and truth. Its magical system revolves around inherited abilities known as Heritage, while royal institutions, universities, laboratories and forgotten archives reveal the darker workings of a kingdom that has long presented itself as orderly.

At the heart of the story is Ariel herself. Intelligent and relentless, she is also a young woman carrying the weight of survivor’s guilt and the fear that her family’s history may be more troubling than she ever imagined. Her pursuit of revenge becomes a deeper reckoning with inheritance: whether loyalty requires preserving an old system, or whether some legacies need to be broken.

The people who accompany her add another dimension to the narrative. Xavier brings his knowledge of Heritage, while Lionel’s devotion is complicated by secrets of his own. Rye, a former child assassin, and Lex, a former cage fighter dealing with trauma, each bring difficult pasts to a group that gradually becomes a found family. Their relationships give the novel room to explore trust, grief and healing alongside its darker revelations. As Ariel gets closer to the truth, she uncovers the work of centuries-old subterfuge that has been manipulating political events and exploiting magical research. The revelations force her to challenge not only those responsible for her family’s destruction, but also the royal contract that has bound House Beowulf for generations.

S. P. Dayne was born in Trinidad and Tobago, raised in India, and later studied and worked in Australia. With degrees in Psychology and Social Work, a love of fantasy and a keen interest in investigative storytelling, Dayne brings together questions of human behaviour, grief and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Her earliest stories began as improvised tales for her younger siblings, a pastime that eventually grew into a lasting commitment to writing.

With Inheritance of Fire, Dayne brings these interests into a story where magic and mystery are closely tied to questions of identity, responsibility and choice. Ariel’s journey begins with a demand for revenge, but the deeper challenge is deciding what deserves to survive when the truth finally comes to light.
