Global Top 100 university brings its postgraduate and undergraduate education offering to Mumbai, with first students commencing in September
Mumbai, September 18, 2026: The University of Western Australia (UWA), a Global Top 100 university and founding member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8), today officially launched its Mumbai campus, marking a significant milestone in the growing education, economic and people-to-people relationship between Western Australia and Maharashtra.
The campus was launched by The Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia, and The Hon. Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, alongside UWA leadership.
UWA has committed around AUD 80 million to establishing and operating its wholly owned campuses in India, underscoring its long-term commitment to the country and its ambition to build a permanent presence that connects education, industry, research and talent between India and Western Australia. The Mumbai campus is the first of two UWA campuses in India, with Chennai scheduled to open in October 2026.
The Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Premier of Western Australia, said: “The opening of UWA’s Mumbai campus marks a significant milestone in Western Australia’s growing relationship with India and Maharashtra. Western Australia has maintained a presence in Mumbai for 30 years, that relationship is deeply rooted in people, knowledge, skills, technology and shared opportunity. UWA’s Mumbai campus is a tangible expression of that relationship, bringing the expertise and global outlook of a Western Australian university to Maharashtra while creating new opportunities for students, businesses and institutions in both India and Western Australia.”
The Hon. Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, said: “Maharashtra is proud to welcome The University of Western Australia to Mumbai. This campus reinforces Mumbai’s position as a global centre for education, business and innovation and gives our young people access to a globally recognised education. We look forward to UWA becoming an important part of our education ecosystem and creating new opportunities for students, institutions and industries.”
Located in Andheri East, the new campus will welcome its first cohort this month giving students the opportunity to pursue a globally recognised UWA qualification while building their careers in India. Professor Diane Smith-Gander AO, Chancellor of UWA, said: “UWA Mumbai is an important next step in our relationship with India. Mumbai is a natural home for UWA – a global centre of business, innovation and ambition. We want to bring a world-class UWA education closer to Indian students, while building stronger connections between Maharashtra and Western Australia.”

UWA Mumbai is more than the opening of a campus – it is the beginning of a new chapter for UWA in India. Our students will have the opportunity to earn the same globally recognised UWA degree as their peers in Perth, while studying in Mumbai, gaining industry exposure, building global networks and developing the skills and confidence to shape their own futures. We are delighted to finally open our doors and welcome our first students.”
UWA Mumbai will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs across business, technology and STEM, designed to equip students with skills aligned to India’s evolving economy and global industry demand. Programs will include Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Business Management and an MBA, with the MBA commencing in November 2026. The 12-month accelerated MBA will develop capabilities across strategy, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, data-driven decision-making and international management. Across its programs, UWA India will combine academic rigour with industry-relevant learning, practical experience and global perspectives.
Situated in Andheri East, the campus places students close to Mumbai’s corporate, financial and technology ecosystem and provides convenient access to the airport and Metro network. The campus features modern, technology-enabled classrooms, project and innovation spaces, group-work areas, student hubs and collaboration facilities. Students will also have opportunities for industry engagement through projects, internships, mentoring and networking, supported by career coaching and employer engagement.
The Mumbai campus provides a new platform to strengthen academic, industry and institutional connections between Maharashtra and Western Australia. UWA has established partnerships with Indian universities, businesses and government organisations across areas including technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, critical minerals, research and innovation.
The campus will create further opportunities to connect students and faculty with Maharashtra’s business and innovation ecosystem and with Western Australian institutions and industries. The partnership is particularly relevant to sectors shaping future economic growth, including technology, innovation, advanced skills, clean energy and critical minerals.
The Mumbai campus is the first of UWA’s two Indian campuses to commence operations, with the Chennai campus scheduled to open in October 2026, expanding the university’s presence and engagement across India. The launch of UWA Mumbai marks the beginning of a deeper partnership between Maharashtra and Western Australia, creating new opportunities across education, talent, research, innovation and industry.
