About the Author

Col. Lakshyajeet Singh Chauhan is an Indian Army officer, aerospace educator and defence-technology innovator whose career brings together military leadership, advanced aerospace research and practical experience in indigenous drone development.

A graduate of IIT Madras with an M.Tech in Aerospace Propulsion, Col. Chauhan served as an Instructor of Aerodynamics and Aircraft Propulsion at the Military College of EME, Secunderabad. In this role, he guided officers and JCOs while supervising research and M.Tech theses in aviation systems. During his tenure, he designed and developed a coaxial rotor UAV and successfully tested its first prototype.

His military career also includes commanding the Maintenance Flight for Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, where he oversaw servicing and flight-line operations. He later led a major EME unit in Jaisalmer with responsibility for six Technical Support Units, including units supporting MBT Arjun tanks and artillery systems.

His commitment to indigenous innovation extends beyond his military responsibilities. His research at IIT Madras on a Rocket Backpack for the Indian Army was selected under the prestigious IMPRINT India Mission. He subsequently expanded his work into the rapidly developing drone ecosystem.

Today, Col. Chauhan serves as Project Head for establishing drone manufacturing at 515 Army Base Workshop, where he has led the design and development of four indigenous drone platforms in partnership with the Bengaluru R&D ecosystem and IIT Madras.

He has also delivered talks on drone technology at institutions including IISc Bangalore and IIM Bangalore, as well as at international conferences organised by IEEE. As a consultant and advisor to aerospace companies, he contributes to the development of ventures spanning agriculture drones, medical-logistics drones, surveillance platforms, RPTO training and advanced autonomy research.

His expertise lies at the intersection of drone engineering, electronic-warfare resilience, network-centric operations, policy frameworks and indigenous manufacturing—giving him a distinctive perspective on India’s evolving aerial technology landscape.
